Understanding Tenses
1. Past Tense
The past tense refers to actions that have already happened. It can be divided into three different types:
a. Simple Past Tense
The simple past tense describes an action that started and finished in the past. For example: I walked to school.
b. Past Continuous Tense
The past continuous tense describes an action that was ongoing in the past. For example: I was walking to school when it started to rain.
c. Past Perfect Tense
The past perfect tense describes an action that was completed before another action in the past. For example: I had walked to school before my friend arrived.
2. Present Tense
The present tense refers to actions that are happening now or regularly occur. It can be divided into three different types:
a. Simple Present Tense
The simple present tense describes habitual actions or truths. For example: I walk to school every day.
b. Present Continuous Tense
The present continuous tense describes an action that is currently happening. For example: I am walking to school right now.
c. Present Perfect Tense
The present perfect tense describes an action that happened at an unspecified time before now. For example: I have walked to school.
3. Future Tense
The future tense refers to actions that will happen. It can be divided into two types:
a. Simple Future Tense
The simple future tense describes an action that will happen in the future. For example: I will walk to school tomorrow.
b. Future Continuous Tense
The future continuous tense describes an action that will be ongoing in the future. For example: I will be walking to school at 8 AM tomorrow.
